We will read the novel in class. Each student will complete a scrapbook as
their project. The project information can be gathered through research and
class readings. The scrapbook must be from the point of view of the main
character, Won-a-pa-lei. Students should be prepared to share the Section Two
Activities with the class.
The scrapbook will consist of the following items:
- Section One.
Students must complete all of the following five activities:
- Illustrations depicting events from at least ten of the chapters in
the novel.
- Journal entries from at least ten of the chapters.
- A time line.
- Pictures of each of the characters. (Computer generated pictures are
allowed.)
- Creative cover to include the author, title, editor (student completing
the scrapbook) and period which the story has occurred.
- Section Two.
Students must choose any four of the following activities:
- A map of the island to include map key, scale, and legend.
- A one to two page report on the dolphins found near the island.
- A one to two page report on two animals or fish found on or near the island.
- Invent a creative tool that could be used by Won-a-pa-lei. Write a short
description of its use. This tool should be no larger than the size of
your hand.
- You are a reporter from the Santa Barbara Mission Gazette. When Karana
is rescued from the island, you have the opportunity to interview her
for your paper. Write an article detailing Karana's rescue and how
she survived for so many years. Be sure to include quotations from
Karana.
- Compare the Chumash and the Aleuts. What do they have in common? What
are their differences?
- Design a travel brochure. Include the features of the island to include
vegetation and animal life, suggestions of activities while on the
island, reasons for staying on the island, and its historical importance
to include the inhabitants who once lived on the island.
- Research the Lost Woman of San Nicolas. Write a two page report.
- This assignment is due two weeks after we complete the novel in class.
The due date will most likely be the week before winter break.
