Teacher and Classroom Resources
I try to supplement my instruction with relevant information, projects, and other activities that have been tried and tested by other teachers in their classes. Having borrowed extensively from the cybercommunity over the years, I want to return in kind some activites that may be useful to others.

The following are some web based activities and materials that we have developed and used in my third (and now fifth) grade class. I hope that you may find these useful in your class!

Interactive Web Applications

The following resources are JavaScript programs that require you to be able to run JavaScript from within your web browser. Please feel free to link our pages to your classroom or school web pages.

  Math Skills
Mad Math Minutes Improve your basic math skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You can pick the number and types of problems that you want to practice to reinforce what you have learned in class.
Change It! This is a simple program that helps you learn basic money skills by adding up all of those pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and half-dollar coins.
Compare It! Learn the basics of using math expressions greater than, less than, equal to, and others using either words or symbols. You can compare numbers, numeric words or even objects such as circles, stars and bear prints!
Place Value Learn the basics of place value. You enter a number an I'll show you the place value for up to sixteen digits!
  Language Arts
Word Scrambler Using our weekly spelling words, Word Scrambler selects a limited number from the list of available words and garbles them for you to unscramble. Each time you load the page, a new set of words and scrambled text is used. These are not as easy as you might think!
Spell It! Using our weekly spelling words, Spell It! selects a limited number from the list of available words and randomly removes letters from them for you to replace. Each time you load the page, a new set of words and missing letters are used.
Word Search Puzzles Each of our spelling word lists contains an interactive Word Search game on them. Pick the word list you want to use and go to the bottom of the page where you can begin playing by clicking on the "New Game" button. Each time you re-load the page a new Word Search puzzle is created.
Sort It! Using our weekly spelling words, Sort It! selects a limited number of words from the spelling list and presents them in a random order for you to place back into alphabetical order. Each time you load the page, a new set of words and presentation order is used.

Interactive Classroom Quizzes

Interactive Quizzes We (okay my husband but my ideas) wrote a program called Quizzism that is an interactive (ask and answer) program thats generates random questions (and answers) based on data files containing questions on various subjects. I use this tool as a study guide and reinforcement on our Weekly Preview and Homework On-line pages when appropriate.

Teachers may find these useful as sample quizzes or tests for their classroom. Unlike the interactive style of those on our Kids Stuff Page, these allow you to generate printable quizzes that are suitable for classroom use (no page logo or navigation buttons, and radio buttons are replaced with letters). Reloading the page changes the questions as well as the order that questions and answers appear. Try them!

Instructions for Creating Printed Quizzes

To generate a quiz for your class (clicking on the quiz name will take you to the on-line interactive version):
  1. First select the quiz you want by clicking the radio button to the left of the quiz name.
  2. Next enter the number of questions to use in the Number of Questions field at the end of this list.
  3. Press the Create Quiz button below to preview the quiz. If you are satisfied with the quiz provided ... print it out. If you want to regenerate the quiz (scramble questions and the order they appear) just hit the Reload button on your browser.
  4. Press the Answer Key button on the displayed quiz page to generate the corresponding answer sheet!
